Medal of Honor recipient Bennie Adkins died Friday of the coronavirus. He was 86.

In the Vietnam War, Army Command Sgt. Maj. Adkins volunteered for Special Forces and was deployed three times between 1963 and 1971. In March 1966, Adkins was credited with killing 135 to 175 Vietnamese in a nearly four-day battle while being wounded 18 times and helping fellow soldiers to safety.

None of these numbers is a typo.

After his military service, Adkins obtained a bachelor's degree and two master's degree. Later in life, he created the Bennie Adkins Foundation to provide scholarships to Special Forces soldiers in their transition from military to civilian life.
