Still a ton of season left to play and things can always change, but this team feels different than any Kliff team I’ve seen before.
Confession: I’ve been critical of Kliff the past two years or so. I was disgusted as I could be with the Ole Miss game and the first half of West Virginia. In fact, due to weather, we’ve been behind on the farm lately so I gave up at halftime of the WVU game to go get back on the tractor.
But this program this year just has a different feel to it.
We seem more prepared. We seem to make more adjustments as the game goes. David Gibbs was right, things HAVE changed. Scheier, for the first time in a very long time has us a solid special teams group in all phases. Kliff seems to be managing the games better. We are faster and more physical than ever before. We’ve found a way to finish.
I don’t know what the final record will end up being, but I predicted maybe 4-5 wins before the season and I wouldn’t be shocked if we found 8 wins before a bowl game.
Again, I’ve been critical of Kliff, and thought he didn’t have it in him to turn the corner with this program. I don’t want to say we’ve turned it just yet, but damn it feels like we’re headed in the right direction for the first time since 2008.
Kudos to Kliff, Johns, Gibbs, the coaching staff, Rusty Whitt and especially the players for working hard and busting their asses. It’s paying off. And kudos to Kirby for going with his gut last year. Seems to be paying off.
The only knock i’ll toss against the team last night is the penalties. Way too many of them. Inside the 15 yard line after the big hitter to Wesley. 20 yards of penalties and a sack to a 3-man rush. Knocked you outside of FG range and forced to punt. I thought for a while that series might be a back-breaker. Got to clean that mess up going forward.
