Kirby gambled on Kliff, knowing he was a brilliant OC, hoping he had what it took to BECOME a great head coach.
Kliff has a hard time properly delegating and holding others accountable. Head coaches oversee the program, and manage assistants. Kliff is the OC, and allows Gibbs to do whatever he thinks is best on defense. I would guess that Kliff has never chewed anyone's ass in his life, maybe Morris's.
Kliff will take all of this on himself, work his ass off trying to make the offense good enough to overcome the issues with the team before he ever holds the other coaches truly accountable. He hasn't learned how to do that yet.
Kliff actually needs additional pressure from Kirby, local media, and the fanbase before he will change. We've all (Kirby, media, fanbase) made it too easy on him to field a mediocre team. He can't work any harder, he needs to be pushed so that he learns to make others work harder. My hot sports take this morning. His issues are common with a lot of first time managers that have his personality, it's hard for many to transition to managers from great individual contributors.
I'm not done with Kliff, wouldn't matter if I was, but I do think some additional heat would benefit his growth.
