ACU has hosted an All-Comers meet for years designed to provide a place for athletes to get qualifying times/marks in a low-key setting. The events are a real mixed bag, some are very tough and have only 2-3 entries in the event.
I was a bit surprised to see a large Tech contingent. However, as I looked at the Tech entries, I see that they fall into three primary categories: 1) kids who are very close to regional qualifying and a low-key meet where they only compete in one event might be the perfect place to make that regional qualifying standard, 2) kids who are on the bubble on getting to compete at conference, and 3) the kids who will definitely compete at conference who simply don't want to wait another week to get out there and compete again. I notice that several kids in that third category are running shorter distances than usual - kind of a speed workout with fully automatic timing.
Here are the Tech entries by event:
MEN
100 - Skye Green, Rashad Hawk (Rashad ran a 10.39 last year at a regional qualifiers HS meet. If he gets anywhere close to that he really helps this team.)
400 - Rodney Mims, Lamont Adams, Bill Lawhorn (it looks like Tech will not try to get an injury redshirt for Bill), Tim Foster
800 - Cory Higgins, Logan Culotta, Gilbert Limo, Silas Kemboi, Edwin Sang
1500 - John Means, Jake Szot
5K - Eric Ayala
110H - Shawon Harris, Omo Osaghae, Jansen Hyde, Nathan Lowry
400H - Shawon Harris, Jansen Hyde, Wouter LeRoux
Steeple - David Boston
4X100 - this is a great chance to practice those handoffs with Rashad Hawk in a real, live setting. Besides Rashad, Skye Green, and Julius Walker, I wonder who will run that 4th leg. Jansen Hyde, as TTUJayvee suggested last week?
4X400 - I wonder if this will be the top 4X400 group. Also, I wonder if Rodney Mims or Tim Foster might take Shawon Harris' place on the relay with Bill Lawhorn, Gil Roberts, and Lamont Harris and free Shawon up to try to win both hurdle races at conference?
HJ - Justin Turner, Lyle Leong
PV - Brian Porter, Kelly Wilson
LJ - Anthony Flemons, Bobby Evers, Lyle Leong, Waylon Randolph, Travon Hill
TJ - Anthony Flemons, Bernard Hammonds
SP - Harrison Benjamin, Tyler Menges
DT - Brett McDaniel, Tyler Menges
Javelin - Paden Behrens
Missing from the list of men competing is Brandon Washington, Zach Plinario and Jamar Wall, among others. That confirms to me that Brandon is redshirting for sure, Zach might be able to apply for a medical redshirt this year after running in only the first meet of the year, and Jamar simply did not have a good enough indoor season to warrant his coming out after football.
WOMEN
400 - Jonisha Boleware, Keshima Starks, Erica Worthy, Asia Diaz, Gladys Kipsang (interestingly, distance runner Asia Diaz anchored her HS 4X400 relay at Garland Naaman Forest and is a pretty decent quartermiler).
800 - Shannon Jackson, Kearci Jobe
3K - Michelle Guzman, Chep Boit (TTUJayvee, who do you predict will run the 10K at comference? I feel certain that Michelle will run it, as you suggested on this board a few weeks ago. Any other women running it? Will Tech run anyone in the men's 10K?)
100H - Sandra Iwunze
400H - Jasmine Flournoy
4X100 and 4X400 - I am really interested to see who makes up these relays
HJ - Kelsey Lloyd
PV - Kelley Schulz, Jessie Gibbs
LJ - Janell Appelhans, Veronica DiLullo
TJ - Veronica DiLullo
SP - Patience Knight, DeDe Carter
DT - DeDe Carter, Patience Knight, Ozie Okolie
HT - Ozie Okolie
Names missing from the list are vaulters Amanda Alley and Katie Veith and hurdler Tori Smith. All three have been injured and I suspect that all three will join quartermiler Louise Cox in redshirting this season.
Some kids to particularly watch to see if they get first time regional qualifying marks are Lamont Adams, Bill Lawhorn, Tim Foster, Kelly Wilson, Jonisha Boleware, Shannon Jackson, Jasmine Flournoy and Kelsey Lloyd.
This little meet will tide me over until conference in 10 days! And, I am expecting HUGE things from Tech at the conference meet.
