I can somewhat understand why trying to score with 42 seconds and one timeout was too risky. However, once they got to 2nd and goal from the one, I don't know why we didn't use both of our available timeouts to save clock.
The play clock did reset when we got our substitution penalty (which may not have happened had we immediately burned a timeout), so K state was able to burn more clock than they should've. But, theoretically, we could have had at least 1:30 with no timeouts to attempt scoring a TD or at least give Hatfield another chance at a FG.
