There are obviously competing interests among donors vs. Kirby and TTU admin. BMDs have the money lined up to buy out Wells assuming certain conditions are met (primarily, they want Briles). Kirby doesn’t want to admit the Wells hire was bad by firing him, but doesn’t want to risk losing his job by keeping Wells longer and having another losing season. Here’s the solution that appeases all parties.
1. Hire Joey McGuire as HC, Art Briles as OC. University admin take a much smaller PR hit with Briles as an assistant instead of running an entire program. Briles mentors McGuire. BMDs aren’t going to buyout Wells “just” for McGuire, but I think they’d do it if Briles were OC.
2. Donors get what they want. Briles.
3. TTU admin gets what it wants: huge donations, don’t have to justify hiring Briles as HC, and a clean break from Wells instead of dealing with a mess next year.
4. Fans (kind of) get what they want. Many won’t know who McGuire is but they’ll be happy Wells is gone. Many don’t like Briles, but OC is easier to stomach than HC.
Seriously, who says no? Especially if admin only caves with a huge financial contribution from BMDs. If either side is willing to throw everything away because they don’t completely get what they want, it’s foolish. BMDs settle a little by getting Briles as OC. Admin settles a little by bringing in Briles at all. Fans settle a little with the McGuire/Briles ticket (some, anyway, others would love it), but they’ll be happy Wells is gone. Who says no?
