LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech men’s tennis team takes the court for the first time in 2015-16 at the Midland Invitational, while Felipe Soares will participate at the Oracle/ITA Masters event in California over the weekend.

The Red Raiders notched 19 victories en route to their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance over the last 11 seasons in 2015.

“I’m excited for the team to have the opportunity to get out there and compete,” head coach Brett Masi said. “It’s been a great month of practicing and getting ready. The guys have put in a lot of hard work, and they will have a chance to produce against quality competition during the fall.”

Soares is coming off an impressive junior season where he earned ITA Singles and Doubles All-American accolades. He was the first player in program history to reach the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Singles Championships. The 16-player Oracle/ITA Masters field features the nation’s best returning singles players highlighted by seven players ranked among the preseason Top 10 of the Oracle/ITA rankings. Soares meets No. 2 seed Virginia’s Ryan Shane in the opening round.

“Felipe deserves this opportunity after the season he put together last year,” Masi said. “You have nothing to lose and everything to gain when you play against tough competition like he will face this weekend. He’s excited, and he wants to play well.”

Soares is ranked No. 18 and joined by four of his teammates in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings. The list includes Jolan Cailleau at No. 79, Alex Sendegeya at No. 81 and Hugo Dojas at No. 101. Tommy Mylnikov is tabbed at No. 6 in the ITA’s National Newcomer/Freshman rankings.

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women’s tennis team starts the fall season with the first of four tournaments at the Midland Invitational over the weekend.

The Lady Raiders are coming off a single season school record 21 wins and secured the program’s first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season.

“We’re looking forward to getting the 2015-16 season underway in Midland,” head coach Todd Petty said. “The team has worked hard during the offseason. These fall matches will give our players valuable match experience against quality competition which will get us ready for the spring season.”

Texas Tech has a quartet of players ranked inside the Top 125 of the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis preseason singles rankings. Lynn Kiro is ranked No. 51 followed by Sabrina Federici at No. 86, Sarah Dvorak at No. 94 and Gabriela Talaba at No. 103. The Lady Raiders are the only Big 12 school and one of just nine schools in the nation to have at least four singles players ranked by the ITA.

Texas Tech welcomes a trio of talented newcomers in Autumn Crossnoe, Felicity Maltby and Alex Valenstein for the 2015-16 season.
