It's interesting to view the current allocation of scholarships between offense/defense/special teams and within position group. SB Nation had an article several years back (https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...football-offenses-defenses-recruiting-players ) that talked about a distribution of the 85 scholarships as follows:
  • Offense - 41 scholarship players
  • Defense - 41 scholarship players
  • Special Teams - 3 scholarships players (kicker/punter/long snapper)
When you compare scholarship allocation at Tech we are currently out-of-whack with offense currently at 44 scholarships, defense at 37 scholarship and special teams at 2 scholarships when you take inconsideration returning scholarship players and recent signees.
  • Offense: QB (3)/RB (4)/WR (17)/TE (5)/Oline (15)
  • Defense: Dline (10)/LB (13)/DB (14)
  • Special Teams: Punter (McNamara)/Kicker (Garibay)
Our last 6 signees in the late signing period will probably include a running back, one/two offensive linemen, one/two defensive linemen and one/two safeties. The one position that is clearly over weighted is at wide receiver. Coaches wouldn't have gone out and signed four (4) receivers if we were already "fully stocked" at the receiver position. Unless something fluky happens I don't see - Xavier Martin, Mark Richardson, Myller Royals, Sterling Galban, Trey Cleveland or Cameron Cantrell breaking the 2-deep let alone the 3 deep. Some attrition in this position group would be a good thing.
