First off. Gnash teeth, kick puppies, curse the baseball gods. Losing Gingery 2 innings into the 2018 campaign is not ideal. But what's done is done. Really hoping that Steven can get healed up as quickly as possible and get right back onto what was an incredible career trajectory. Just sick to my stomach for him. But let's look at what TTU has to face this week to get to 9-0.

New Mexico State - Tuesday

- The Aggies went 2-1 this weekend scoring an impressive 43 runs in those 3 games, including a 24 run explosion against Towson. The main question is; How good was Towson University?

- NMSU will toss out Brock Whittlesley. Who threw 2.1 scoreless innings this past weekend. He's a transfer from Gateway CC in Arizona. Not sure what to expect out of him.

- I believe that Texas Tech will counter with Ryan Shetter, who looked shaky coming out of the bullpen Saturday but still flashes great stuff. If he can cut down on walks and really pound the zone, he has a chance to get back into the weekend rotation.

TTU - 12
NMSU - 6

This weekend against UTSA

- Since Gingery stepped on campus, TTU hasn't had to fare a Saturday without him. They will this weekend. Who will answer the bell?

- The Roadrunners took a series 2-1 over the University of San Fransisco. Outscoring San Fran 26-17

- UTSA starters look to have had a good weekend, but SF was able to get after their bullpen a little bit. 5 bullpen guys for UTSA have ERA's above 5.0. It's just opening weekend, so a bad inning can balloon up on your ERA pretty quickly. But it's something to keep an eye on.

- They hit .280 as a team on the weekend, which pales in comparison to the .366 thrown down by the Red Raiders. Especially when you consider they compiled 28 walks and 18 HBP as well. An OBP of .522 on a weekend is absurd. UTSA also struck out an average of 10 times per game. No bueno.

- Another thing to keep an eye one is the aggressiveness on the base paths for TTU. They went 10-12 on steals against Maine. Which is a bit of an eye popper, considering they only stole 51-72 the entire season last year. You got 20% of your season steals in one weekend. That brings a whole new threat to the table when facing TTU.

Opponents to watch

- The UTSA offense will be paced by two players. Chase Keng and Bryan Arias. Both are top of the lineup threats, as most of the RBI's were pushed across by others. But anywhere further down the lineup, you're looking at .230 ish batting averages. Again, after one weekend that's pretty misleading for most. Bowles and Tapia had bombs on the weekend along with 5 RBI's.

- Of their 3 starting pitchers last weekend, Dressler was the only pitcher to go further than 3.2 innings. He pitched very well for 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

Red Raiders to keep your eye on.

- There are only so many times I can type Gabe Holt and Josh Jung as players to watch. But here they are again. Both had dominant weekends, one was expected in Jung, but I don't think anyone thought Gabe would waltz onto Dan Law and look like he's played multiple seasons for you. His base stealing threat is going to be a big deal this season.

- Davis Martin needs to be dominant on Friday nights. Last season when Davis went down, Gingery picked up the slack and allowed a bullpen to be a little more taxed to piece together Friday wins. Davis needs to do the same thing this year. 6 innings every Friday allows you to be fresh as daisies out of the pen for the remainder of the series.

- Keep an eye on how long of a leash Connor Beck receives in RF. He stung several balls right at guys this past weekend, but when the rest of the team explodes and you don't hit well, it can get mental. It doesn't help that Simonich came in and went 2/3 with 4 RBI's. Will be a battle to see who wins those AB's come conference time. Strange to not see Masters at all.

TTU sweeps 4-0 this week.

Too much offensive firepower. Holt - Davis - Little - Jung - Koelzer - Warren - McMillon - Farhat - Beck - Klein

You tell me who you circle in that lineup as a guy you can just get out consistently.

First pitch today at 2pm.
