TEXAS TECH PREVIEW: at Oklahoma

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is set for its first Big 12 road test of the season when it takes on Oklahoma at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

The No. 14-ranked Red Raiders (6-2, 0-1 Big 12) are coming off a 58-57 loss to No. 5 Kansas last Thursday in Lubbock, while the Sooners (5-1, 1-0 Big 12) secured a pair of non-conference wins over Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist last week. Tech enters the week second in the nation by limiting opponents to only 52.4 points per game and is seventh with an 8.5 turnover margin advantage and 20.0 turnovers forced per game. The team also ranks sixth in the NCAA with 144 made free throws and is second in the Big 12 with 118 assists and 34 blocked shots.

Mac McClung leads the Red Raiders at 15.0 points per game after recording a season-high 21 points in the loss to the Jayhawks where he was 9-for-10 at the free-throw line and also hit two 3-pointers. McClung is now 40-for-47 (85.1 percent) at the line this season and has made six or more free throws in five of eight games this season. Terrence Shannon, Jr. also scored a season-high against KU after going off for 20 points and nine rebounds. Shannon hit a career-high four 3-pointers in the game and was four points shy of his career-high 24 point performance last season at DePaul. Micah Peavy added eight points and six rebounds in the first Big 12 game of his career, while Marcus Santos-Silva had five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Santos-Silva, who is Tech's only senior and a VCU grad transfer, now has 12 blocks this season and is currently second in the Big 12 with 1.5 blocks per game and is fifth in the conference with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Kyler Edwards leads the Big 12 with a 3.25 assist-to-turnover ratio and Nimari Burnett tops the conference with 17 total steals. As a team, TTU has a 1.28 assist-to-turnover ratio which is third in the Big 12 and its 11.5 turnovers are the second fewest in the conference behind only Oklahoma which enters the game at 10.5 turnovers per.
OU opened Big 12 play with an 82-78 win at TCU on Dec. 6 with Austin Reaves going off for 32 points along with nine assists and six rebounds. Reaves went 16-for-18 at the free-throw line in his 32-point performance and also knocked down two 3-pointers. Brady Manek added 14 points and Harmon had 13 in the road victory over the Horned Frogs where they shot 51.9 percent from the field and hit six 3-pointers. The Sooners are 4-0 at home this season coming into the game.

Manek leads OU with 16.7 points per game and with 18 3-pointers through six games, while Reaves is scoring 16.3 points per game and is 41-for-46 (89.1 percent) from the free-throw line. Reaves led the Sooners with 15 points in their 84-65 win over HBU on Saturday and also had four assists. Kur Kuath is adding 5.0 rebounds and 8.7 points per game and De'Vion Harmon is scoring 11.0 points per game to give OU three players averaging in double figures. OU is averaging 85.3 points per game this season by shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 82.1 percent at the free-throw line.

Tech is on the road for the third time this season, but will be playing its first true road game after competing in neutral-court games against Houston in Fort Worth and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Frisco. The Red Raiders were 3-6 on the road in Big 12 play last season.

MEDIA: The game will be televised on ESPN2 with Mark Neely and Fran Fraschilla on the call and on the radio through the Texas Tech Sports Network with Geoff Haxton and Chris Level. Locally the game can be heard on 97.3 Double-T.

SERIES HISTORY: Texas Tech has won four of the last five meeting in the series, but trails overall by a 40-27 margin after falling in the second matchup last season. Tech earned a 69-61 win at home but fell 65-51 on Feb. 25 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The Sooners are 25-8 on their home court against Tech. Beard is 5-3 against OU as the team's head coach. Kyler Edwards scored 17 points against OU in the home game last season and eight in OKC. Kevin McCullar led Tech in the loss on the road with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals.

BIG 12 ROAD OPENERS: Tech is 2-2 in conference road openers under Beard. The team fell at No. 17 West Virginia last season in its first Big 12 road test after opening conference play in the 2018-19 season with a 62-59 win over the Mountaineers for their first in in Morgantown.

UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will return from the Christmas break to host Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at the United Supermarkets Arena before returning to Big 12 play by hosting Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 2 and Kansas State on Tuesday, Jan. 5. The game against UIW will be the second to last non-conference matchup for the Red Raiders who will travel to Baton Rouge to play LSU on Saturday, Jan. 30 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.1608519884423.jpeg
