In an effort to keep up with the former players we have in the MLB and MiLB, I will be keeping a running tab on who is currently playing professional baseball and a few of their stats. From what I can gather, Tech has 20 total players in either the MLB or MiLB, with 16 of those being pitchers.
Pitchers in the majors:
AJ Ramos (Miami Marlins)
--Ramos was drafted in 2009 by the Miami (Florida) Marlins in the 21st round (638 overall). Ramos was called up to the majors in 2012 with the Marlins and has not been sent down since. Ramos had only 9.1 innings of work in 11 appearances that year. Ramos' work load immediately increased the next year in 2013, where he threw 80 IP in 68 appearances. He dropped his opponent BA from .229 to .201 from 2012 to 2013. In 2014, Ramos saw similar numbers in IP and appearances, while continuing to drop his ERA and opponent average to .146. The 2015 campaign has seen Ramos been given the full time closer role where he has picked up 7 saves in 9 opportunities. Ramos' opponent average is an impressive 0.78 while sporting a 0.95 ERA.
Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies)
--Bettis was drafted by the Rockies in the 2nd round (76th overall) in the 2010 draft. Bettis saw his first major league action in March of 2014 and has been up and down between the Rockies and their AAA team (Albuquerque Isotopes). Bettis was recalled on 5-14-15 and has seen his stock suddenly skyrocket. Bettis took a no hitter into the 8th inning on 5-29-15 and his last 4 outings have all been classified as quality starts. Bettis has started 5 games this season and sits at 2-0 on the year with a 2.70 ERA while holding his opponents to a .224 average.
Nathan (Nate) Karns
--Karns was drafted in 2009 by the Washington Nationals in the 12th round (352 overall). Karns made his MLB debut for the Nationals in May 2013. Karns would only see action in 3 games that year, after which, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. Karns would only make two appearances in 2014 for the Rays, but 2015 has been a different story for him. Karns has pitched in 11 games, with all being starts. He holds a 3-2 record and a 3.63 ERA. He is next slated to pitch on 6-9-15 vs the Angels.
Josh Tomlin
--Tomlin was drafted in 2006 by the Cleveland Indians in 19th round. Tomlin pitched in the minor leagues for 4 years (2006-2009) before being called up to the Indians in 2010, where he stayed for 3 years. Tomlin was then designated for assignment and dropped all the way back down to AA due to Tommy John Surgery. Tomlin is now having shoulder surgery and has not pitched in 2015. The surgery was before the season started and he was expected to be out 4-6 months.
Due to time constraints on my part, I am only going to post the above 4 names (only players in the big leagues). Tomorrow, I will (hopefully) finish the list with the remaining players that are in the minors. This list will include:
Andre Wheeler, Brett Bruening, Chris Sadberry, Colt Hynes, Daniel Coulombe, Duke von Schamann, Dustin Richardson, James Leverton, Jared McCrummen, Reid Redman, Shane Browyles, Trey Masek, Zach Stewart, Barrett Barnes, Hunter Redman, Kelby Tomlinson and Roger Kieschnick.
Please add any names that you see have been left off, and I will research that person and add stats similar to the above players.
