I was 6 years old in 1957. When the news came out about Sputnik I remember being shocked. I remember walking out in the backyard in the afternoon and looking up at the sky. It was inconceivable to me (and trust me, everyone else alive) that an object was up in Space. Space was a magical and unknown place. Off to the races we went. As a boy I was caught up in the excitement of the space race. I can remember the euphoria that swept over the nation when the 7 Mercury Astronauts were announced. Then in 1962 John Glen was rocketed up to orbit. Anyone alive was caught up in Space and then when I was in High School I watched Armstrong step out.

Today we are more knowledgeable about the vastness of our universe and I think we don't know if we are diminished, scared or what? God Speed John Glenn.
