The Texas Tech football program won't return to the practice field for more than a week, so we thought it would be a good time to check with several sources to see how things stand after four practices.
-Newcomers Octavious Morgan (corner), Willie Sykes (nickel) and Vaughnte Dorsey (safety) have worked with the first-team defense during multiple practices.
-Speaking of Morgan, he has impressed several people that have attended practice this spring. He's been turning heads.
-Kolin Hill and Lonzell Gilmore have been splitting time with the first group at one of the defensive end spot, with Eli Howard manning the other.
-Nic Shimonek has been noticeably more vocal than his immediate predecessors, and that includes getting on teammates for mistakes. That's notable not because it's good or bad, just different. This seems to go with what we know of Shimonek's personality, as Eric Morris told the media Sunday that No. 16 has asked Morris and Kliff Kingsbury to be harsher and blunter with their critiques of his performance.
-From what we understand, Shimonek will be spending his spring break in Lubbock, working on his game.
-True freshman Jack Anderson (guard) has been a mainstay with the first-team offensive line.
-Payne Sullins looks to be the No. 2 quarterback at this point.
-The run game wasn't magically fixed over the winter offseason. Four practices in, it's clearly still a work in progress.
-Kingsbury has spent multiple practices exclusively with the team's defense.
-The sense that we get is that players that were on the roster in 2014 are jacked about Dakota Allen being back on the team. They think he will be a bit of a game-changer for the defense.
