Matt Wells
- Wells saying they had a lot of fun out there and stayed healthy while getting a lot of reps for the young guys. He brought back a lot of Red Raider alums and they thanked them at the end. He wants the current guys and the program to appreciate those past players. That's important to him.
- They held a lot of guys back. A lot of the first team were limited. The guys he held out were pre-spring ball injuries or that just got hurt. A few were out due to sickness.
- Erik Ezukanma broke his arm in practice in two spots on Thursday. He had surgery on Friday. This won't derail his Texas Tech or NFL career. It'll be dealt with over the summer and he might be a quick healer. He'll play a lot of football for them. They'll know more in six weeks.
- Offensively, the running back room and tight ends were solid today. The running backs have been improving and had a great spring. The defensive backs have been better for them as well.
- They take pride in not wasting practices. He said the guys they brought in two years ago are showing their maturity. The transfers they brought in come in and give off nothing but terrific work. they're always learning and practicing, which is rubbing off on the others. They want to be confident based on the time and work they put into this program. It needs to be on the line of being cocky and knowing they can win every game with confidence.
- Henry started taking the reps at 1st-team QB in the spring just based off of his return. Shough then arrived day three. Morton and Smith are the future but they don't know when that is. They have the talent and good days but also have bumps in the road. They'll all go into the summer in player-run workouts and that's where they need to make their strides. "Reps aren't given, they're earned." Wells saying that's the toughest position in this program to get reps in. Today's scrimmage didn't do much for them with the limited reps. He's excited to see that competition all summer.
- All of these QBs are good. It's the best QB room they've had since being here. It's their job to earn their reps.
- Riko Jeffers grabbed the mic and MC'ed during 7-on-7 and one-on-ones. Wells saying it's tough when you're rehabbing an injury. He commends SaRodorick, Dawson and Riko for becoming somewhat of assistant coaches this spring. He said Malik Dunlap just got here and he's even out there coaching the young guys. That's huge for his defense in terms of leadership.
Sonny Cumbie
- One pre-snap penalty slowed them down and that was on them. He's impressed with just having one though. They protected the ball well, too.
- The receiving group's catch radius is impressive. EZ, Trey Cleveland, Sparkman and Loic Fouonji can go and grab a ball if they need it.
- They're down a few linemen but it's an opportunity to build the depth there with the bottom guys. He thought they protected well today. They really had consistency in the run zone blocking scheme.
- Behren Morton's girlfriend was getting ready for prom the other night and Cumbie reminded him about his early arrival. That helps Behren in competing with the others since he can grasp the offense and go forward into the summer with that knowledge. Behren needs to take his reps in one-on-one drills into the team drills.
- Tahj Brooks is going to be great for this team. He scored first on offense and showed flashes. He said he did that all 15 practices. Once SaRodorick is back in the summer/fall this room will be loaded. Freshman Cam'ron Valdez is joining in the summer and Xavier White will be back too. they'll be explosive.
- Tyler Shough can make every throw. It opens the offense up and defensively it makes them cover the whole field. He adds that element to the Red Raider offense. He gets the ball out quick, too. Tyler's faster than you think. He's a straight-line runner. He's not a side-to-side runner. They'll have to be smart on calling run plays for them.
- Donovan Smith has been very consistent each scrimmage. His practices day-to-day need to be better. This was his first spring at QB since high school. He was a WR at Bishop-Gorman, arrived at Frenship in the fall and won a lot then he was injured last year.
- Henry Colombi has not backed down. Cumbie said he knows his strengths and weaknesses. He's competed and has been efficient and makes big plays. He understands what they're doing.
Keith Patterson
- This is the best spring they've had since being here. He likes their depth at linebacker and d-line. They continue to take steps forward coverage wise. 15 practices and "they didn't trade time for money for none of those."
- He likes what he sees at the length at corner from Rayshad Williams. He made a couple of plays. Marquis Waters continues to impress. Da'drion Taylor continues to improve and Fields and Frye are doing good things as well. They have to continue to build depth there.
- LB Moore's progression has been good. He's getting used to carrying his 255-pound body, up from 230. Tyree Wilson and Tony Bradford have shown great flashes along with Jaylon Hutchings.
- Patterson saying they work on mirror-hand drills to watch the QB's hand angle. This was displayed on Devin Drew's interception on a pass from JJ Sparkman on a jet sweep play. He tried to get the ball away but Drew read it the whole time.
- Patterson likes the offense's aggressiveness. He said they play like Sonny Cumbie coach's them. He coach's them with a defensive mentality. He added it's made both of them better.
- Patterson is getting an MRI on Monday. He thinks he's dealing with a meniscus tear. He's been fighting through it but it's something they'll get taken care of. He said the guys were giving him some words about it while he was limping around at practice.
Tyler Shough
- He's a lot more comfortable after arriving late. He's been doing a lot of work with the playbook by himself. He says the variety in this offense is what he likes the most.
- Shough said there's a long road ahead but right off the bat he felt chemistry with the receivers. He said he's connected with almost every single guy in the WR room. That will grow a lot more in the summer and fall.
- Shough saying he really doesn't have a favorite throw but he loves deep passes, comebacks. He added running back check downs have been coming along with him as well. He mentioned he's willing to do whatever it takes on offense to win games.
- Adrian Frye and DaMarcus Fields are special players on defense. He said he doesn't pay attention too much to individuals but their calmness stands out to him play-by-play.
- Tyler will be putting in a lot of individual work in the weight room, throwing with the guys in the summer and working with coach Scholz.
JJ Sparkman
- JJ saying Cumbie's offense has been fun to work in. He's been working with Tyler Shough on the field and enjoys having him around. He said they'll go out and practice on their own as well. He said Shough's biggest attribute is his vocal leadership.
- Running blocking will be important for the outside receivers and they're going to do just that.
- They worked on plenty of deep passes which is exciting for the young receiver.

- Devin saying the biggest thing they've done this offseason is build depth. He said that was important to get addressed.
- Devin's interception was really running trying to make a tackle and the ball just landed in his hands.
- Devin's knowledge of the game has made him a better playmaker. they're trying to do that across the board upfront.
- Drew is playing at 280 right now. He's added strength since arriving in Lubbock last year. He played in 10 games last season. He said he's working on his FRC with Scholz as well which deals with his joints and such.
