@C. Level brought this up on the radio the other day RE: QB competition this year and how it is similar to 2004. Can someone walk me through this QB competition at the time? What was the scuttlebutt on the message board and in the media? This was well before I started paying attention to anything, and I want some insight.
Sonnie Cumbie was a walk-on from Snyder who was entering his fifth year. Robert Johnson was the flashy 5-star dual-threat QB signee expected (maybe) to come in and provide a completely different dimension to the offense. You also had Graham Harrell coming in in the same 2004 class and Cody Hodges was on the roster as well.

Johnson listed as the No. 4 impact recruit for the 2004 class.
"Imagine Mike Leach’s offense with a guy that can run it just as well as he can throw it."

For those who need a refresher, Robert Johnson couldn't beat out Cumbie and ended up redshirting, then moved to receiver. Cumbie in hist first and last season as a starter ended up leading Texas Tech to an 8-4 record with a 45-31 win over then No. 4 California in the Holiday Bowl. They finished with a final ranking of 18.
Cumbie's numbers were (national rank in parentheses):
421 completions (1)
642 attempts (1)
4,742 passing yards (1)
32 touchdowns (5)
18 interceptions (3)
4,575 total yards (1)
To me, the 2004 competition seems very similar to this year. You have the guy (Duffey) who everyone wants to see because he is "different" than any other QB Tech has had recently with his serious wheels and DT ability. Carter isn't the flashiest, but I guarantee you he is out there working his tail off. Was Harrell a threat at all in the 2004 competition? Things worked out well for all involved in 2004 and beyond. How it will it play out this year? Who knows...
Anyways...just wanted y'all's thoughts.
