I see a lot of the things Kirby saw and here is why I’m pretty pumped about what Wells can do here.

Kliff’s biggest downfall was his abiltiy to put together a staff and Wells abiltiy to put together a staff is a strength. The two coordinators look very promising and seem to really like coaching with him. Yost’s offense speaks for itself but the turnovers and points per drive are impressive for defense.

I like that he said he will spend time with each player and his job is culture and making sure the team is all pulling in the same direction. Coach O at LSU has gotten a lot of credit from players at being good at this and a big reason for their success this year.

One of the big negatives was his 3-9 seasons and after today it looks like a strength. A lot of close losses and players never quit on him. He used to call plays and gave that up and re-examined his entire process and built the program back up. It made him make sure it wouldn’t happen again. Nice amount of HC experience and abiltiy to adapt.

He has way more ties to Texas than originally thought and I’m interested to see how he does with this class. He looks pretty personable so far.

Love that they use a tight end. I think that has really been missing from our offense. 50/50 run pass split is nice.

He says he is personally involved in special teams and is trying to get an impressive ST coach.

I think he will run a clean program and graduate players.

I think what did Kliff in was his staff, lack of an abiltiy to be a true head coach, penalties, and recruiting/retention.

I think Wells will be a great CEO and put together a good staff. The only questions I have are his penalties, P5 experience, and can he recruit a level up from Kliff so maybe break into the 30s.

At a minimum I think he will get us to a bowl consistently by improving on a lot of little things that Kliff didn’t do. After a few years to build the roster and his culture, I’m excited to see how successful he can be.

In many ways this guy is an opposite hire from Kliff but schematic similarities should help aid our progress.
