In this passing era many teams largely operate from the shotgun. Most still have plays from under center. We have almost none. Short yardage defenses completely change running from the shotgun.

Tech lines their Rb's largely to the side of the QB and has them come get the ball. Thus if we are in a single back set the back is almost always going to crossover the center eliminating the need to defend 1/3 of the LOS. The rb receives the ball moving laterally requiring him cut from 60 - 135 (assuming the defense is slanting down in short yardage the actual point of attack is approximately 100 degree cut) degrees to cut up field. Unless your Barry Sanders this cut kills most your momentum. The scheme also requires lineman to hold their blocks longer not a good idea when you have one of the worst lines in the Big 12. Since Jett seldomly pulls the handoff we allow the unblocked DE to chase down the line as happened on our last offense play.

I know Briles and Oregon have run effectively out of the shotgun but their backs were behind the QB and ran north and south looking for 45 degree cuts. Our offense has been fairly successful running in non short yardage situations.

Why not go under center in short yardage? Use more QB runs? If under center the DT have to first stop the QB sneak. (This play is a huge weapon since pushing from behind is allowed. Put Hutchings and S Thompson behind Jett and go.) When you run from under center you hit the LOS with momentum and better field of vision due to be square to the LOS.

Am I missing something here?
