Had no idea they could shoot this well. 5 guys shooting over 40% from 3, and these aren't small sample sizes. Ryan Cline shot the least amount at 100, which is still more than Niem and Tommy. In Big 10 games only, they had 4 guys in the top 15 for 3 pt %.
2nd nationally in 3 pt shooting at 42.1%. Of their total points, 36% comes from the 3 ball, well above the 31% national average. I can't help but wonder how many open looks they were getting from people packing the paint to defend a 7'2, 300 lb guy.
Haas took a ton of their shots. They shot approx. 1175 2 pointers on the season, with Haas taking 300 of those. Pointing out the obvious, him being out is huge.
Surprisingly, even when they had Haas, they were not a good rebounding team, especially at getting offensive boards where they're one of the worst P5 teams in the country. Haas was getting 10% of every offensive rebound which is in the top 250 in the nation. They should not get many second chances if we put a body on Vincent Edwards.
Since they are poor rebounders, I assumed that was a reflection of their athleticism and that they put other teams on the foul line a lot. Not the case. Their defense is elite in terms of limiting opposing team's foul shots (8th in the country). This is strength on strength because we are the best team in the Big 12 at getting to the line. Again, I wonder how much of their success was having Haas in the paint, who is in the top 150 in block %.
They really take care of the basketball with 22nd best turnover % in the country. Another strength on strength match up.
Their tempo is strange. At first glance, they play as slow as we do (67 possessions per game). But relative to their slow pace, they take very quick shots -- 16.6 seconds per possession, which is comparable to Kansas. On defense, they don't turn you over but they do force you to take long offensive possessions (18.8 seconds per offensive possession against them, which is 348th out 351 teams).
I bet this game is in the 50s. We won't turn them over much. Their defense won't force the issue like SFA and will let our motion run for 20-25 seconds. And our perimeter defense will likely prevent them from taking the quick shots that they are accustomed to.
With Haas out, I really like this match up for us.
