Just rec’d this from the Rawls Dean. I didn’t know Pat well, but I know he loved Tech dearly. RIP.
Good morning,
I am sorry to share the news of the passing of one of the Rawls College’s dear friends and supporters and a member of the Rawls Advisory Council Mr. J. Pat Hickman. His full obituary is provided below.
A native of Canyon, Pat founded and led Happy State Bank for 32 years as chairman, president, and CEO, leading the bank from the 812th largest bank in Texas to the 19th largest. He sold the bank in 2022 and returned to college. He earned his degree from Texas Tech almost exactly 50 years after what would have been his “targeted” graduation date. The college recognized Pat as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2002 (video here), and he is a founding partner of the Excellence in Banking program in the Rawls College. Pat is survived by his wife, Nancy, four children, and 19 grandchildren.
Pat had battled cancer for the last 18 months of his life. He did not let that slow him down, and his absence will be felt throughout the Texas Tech community. If you wish to send condolences, Nancy’s address is: 150 Laurel Leaf Lane, Canyon, TX 79015.
Information regarding visitation and services is included here:
