Friday can only mean one thing for the discriminating Red Raider fan: time for another edition of the Red Raider Confidential. As always, we begin this session with the ground rules. Everything that is reported in the Red Raider Confidential must stay well… confidential. That's the way this deal works. The Red Raider Confidential is posted in the premium forum to ensure that this information stays exclusively within the Raider Nation.

This will continue to be successful only if everyone helps out, so let’s all work together and keep the discussions limited to this board.

Singletary ready to roll

Men’s basketball signee Mike Singletary knows he’s got work to do when he gets to Lubbock later this summer, especially if he wants to contribute.

“I’ll be down there for the second session of summer school, so early July,” Singletary said when asked when he’d be arriving to Lubbock. “I talk to the staff on and off, they have been having those periods lately where they can’t talk to us but I have stayed in contact with them as much as I can.”

While Singletary’s game is already somewhat polished the fact he’s been asked to play out of position some has him wanting to work on his ball handling skills this summer.

“My ball handling is something I need to work on but I’m fine with that. I’ve been playing big man in high school so much and wing during the summer so I want to get my handles a little tighter.

Singletary also knows when playing for Bob Knight that his defense will be a top priority as well but first things first.

“Basically, I just want to get acclimated to the system, work on my game and try to help contribute and be ready to play next year. I just want to work on my game as much as I can get used to being a college student.”

Currently at 6-foot-4 and 220-pounds Singletary recently spent some time with fellow signees John Roberson and D’walyn Roberts in San Antonio as part of the TABC All-Star Game.

“I roomed with John at the TABC last weekend. D’walyn was on the other team and they won but it was cool.”

Rumors of transfer are just that

We’ve been hearing for a few weeks that forward Decensae White was looking to transfer. We never heard that from White but more than individual has contacted us and requesting that we check into it, so we did. We found that the rumors were just that, rumors.

“Coach Knight has put in a tremendous amount of time with my son, and the thought of him not pleasing coach Knight defensively will be heart breaking. No there is no transferring thought patterns here, Decensae needs Coach Knight more then Coach Knight needs him as a player.”

That ends that speculation. David White assured us.

Who is Lynn’s favorite?

Texas Tech legacy D’Anton Lynn has gotten two more offers in the last week from North Texas and Nebraska, bringing the grand total to eight. What’s the one offer that the safety has really been holding out for?

“There’s a whole lot of other schools that came and I just now started talking to and they think they’re going to but haven’t yet,” said Lynn. “Hopefully Ohio State will soon, that’s the offer I’ve been waiting for.”

Lynn has no problem admitting that the two most aggressive schools right now are Iowa and Tech.

“I’m still wide open. I plan on deciding on a school by August but I’m open to anyone right now. I don’t have a favorite or anything, I’m open to anyone.”

The biggest factor is a city-type environment, in which Lynn brought up the Buckeyes once again.

“I’d kind of like to be in a city-type of environment. That’s why I like Ohio State because I Columbus and want to be close to a city. I’m also looking for a coaching staff that I feel comfortable with.”

Without admitting it, it definitely sounds like Ohio State is a front runner for Lynn who has already visited the Buckeye State on one occasion and will going once again this summer.

Lynn’s dad is currently coaching for the Browns and living in Cleveland. This will give the young star an opportunity to a majority of the schools in the Big 10 this June when he stays there for a couple of weeks.

Anthony Lynn is 6-foot-3 and his son currently stands at 6-foot-2 but hopes to eventually grow to his father’s height.

“My dad actually is trying to stay out of the recruiting process and let me make my own decision. The only college he went with me to is Ohio State and that’s because he lives there now in Cleveland.”

Growing up, Lynn was a born and raised Tech fan along with watching the Florida Gators. He hasn’t been back to Lubbock since the 8th grade but looks forward to return this summer.

Bottom line is that Tech is in this thing and will be until the end because of his father once playing for the Red Raiders and his mom attended the school as well. But when everything is said and done, it’s already obvious that it’s going to be difficult for the Tech coaching staff to continue to grasp Lynn’s attention when schools such as Ohio State, Florida, and UCLA.

What does the offer mean to Oku?

As of right now, the long recruiting marathon for ’09 David Oku has Auburn at the top of the list followed by Texas Tech. The Oklahoma running back was offered by Minnesota last week as well but the Gophers have not been nearly as consistent on contacting Oku as the Red Raiders so they do not seem to be a threat.

“Tech is really big but I’m keeping all my options open at the same time,” said Oku. “It puts them at second. Minnesota is a big program but they’re not out there like Tech and Auburn.”

With the Red Raiders not being able to officially offer the Carl Albert stud till September, does the verbal extended offer really mean anything to Oku?

“I had a really big interest in them already but this just sky rockets my interest super high. It does mean a lot, it just shows that they really have interest in you and shows that the schools plan on you having you as apart of their program. Some schools tell you that they have interest but when they offer it shows that they really want you.”

Once again, this will get more complicated as prestigious programs from around the country jump on the Oku band wagon, but because of Seth Littrell the Red Raiders are progressing in what would be a gargantuan pick up for Tech.

As far as a visit to Lubbock in the near future, Oku is aiming to please the Red Raider faithful.

“I’m sure I’ll be there.”

Brown’s Tech connection

There were some evident frustrations shown earlier in the week amongst Red Raider fans regarding Waller defensive tackle Eddie Brown and his comments on how he was not too familiar with Texas Tech and still needed to learn more about them.

Of course the best way for the 6-foot-2, 266-pound lineman to be educated on the West Texas school rather quickly would be if he had a relative that once played Tech.

“I really don’t know too much about Tech but I had a cousin that played for them named Nehemiah Glover.”

Bingo.

Although Brown remembers sitting around the television set with all eyes glued on the Red Raiders and his cousin, it’s been a while since the two have talked.

“I guess at a family reunion and that was a long time ago, probably like three years ago.”

This is a definite string that Tech could pull and don’t be surprised if Glover’s name gets dropped in the future during Brown’s recruitment. The Red Raiders do seem to have a chance with the well sought after tackle but it is believed that they would need to make an impact on him rather quickly before his recruitment gets any more hectic.

Gallington a Gator?

Deveric Gallington is someone to keep an eye on for the 2008 class. With offensive line being an area of need in the ’08 class, Gallington’s recruitment will undoubtedly take on added importance as days go by. The mammoth lineman is actually trying out offense for the first time and has found that college coaches are impressed by what they see.

“I’ve got written offers from Texas Tech, Utah, Oklahoma State, SMU, Purdue, Iowa State, New Mexico, and a couple others,” he explained.

However, Gallington, who has already attended Junior Days at Texas A&M, Kansas, and TCU, already has his eye on three schools.

“Right now I like Tech and Oklahoma State,” he told us on Tuesday. “But Urban Meyer is supposed to come by and see me, so we’ll see how that goes. But right now it’s those two.”

When asked what he liked about Tech, Gallington had this to say.

“I like Tech a whole lot,” he said. “First of all, I have family there and it’s close, it’s in Texas. They go to a bowl game every year, so that’s cool. But mainly it’s closer than all the others and that’s the main thing I’m looking at, location. I don’t want to go too far.”

Apparently Gallington changed his mind about the whole location thing between Tuesday and Thursday, because when we talked to him last night, he had this to say.

“Florida came by my school and they really like me,” he said. “They want me to come visit this summer and check out the facilities and then they said they’d offer me there. I mean, I like Tech and O-State, but if they (Florida) come through with that offer, then I think that’s the school for me.”

I asked him about the distance thing, but he said he’s cool with being in Florida. Whether or not Florida will offer him is questionable, but if they do, he’s as good as gone in our opinion. However, if they don’t offer in the next three months, he could pull the trigger in Tech’s favor.

Bushell likes what he saw

We told you earlier this week about the uber-talented Adrian Bushell, who transferred from Miami Pace High to DeSoto in January. We also told you about his exploits on the track and his recent trip to state. Well, to make it to state, Bushell had to go to Regionals first, which were held where? You guessed it, Lubbock, TX.

So what did the athlete think of the Hub City?

“I’ve actually already visited Tech and I really liked it,” he explained when asked which schools he wanted to visit. “I went over there to Lubbock for Regionals and I really liked it. I saw their weight room and their training facilities, which were top-notch. I saw their stadium too, and noticed that they put in new FieldTurf instead of the old carpet turf. Plus, they’re building on to the stadium, kinda like over where that grass thing is. I just noticed they’re building that town and that whole place up. They’re building all kinds of highways and everything there too, which is tight. I tell you what, that place is a lot bigger than it looks. It’s got a lot of people, but I never knew it.”

With a positive opinion of Lubbock already in hand, Bushell said he also holds the program itself in high regard.

“At Tech, man, they’re up and coming, you know? On the rise,” he stated. “They’re just plain good. I like their system too. I really like their offense they run, they’re not scared to take chances and they don’t play it conservative. And I like their defensive scheme too. They run a lot of man coverage, so if I were to do defense, that would be good.”

So where does Bushell think he’ll end up?

“I don’t know really, I just have a top four,” answered Bushell, who maintains he is not a Florida lean in any capacity. “It’s still just Florida, Michigan, Tech, and West Virginia. I’ve got a good friend at WV, so there’s that. But if I had to decide today, it would depend on which side of the ball I want to play on, which I just don’t care about right now. I would say if I go with defense it will be Michigan or Florida, but if go offense, it will be Tech or West Virginia. We’ll just have to see. I know I want to go to all four of their camps and hopefully that will help me decide.”

Fehoko’s got a prospect in mind

When Honolulu, Hawaii linebacker Sam Fehoko was being recruited by the Red Raiders, there was originally talk about Fehoko’s older brother Whiltley transferring from San Diego State to play on the same team as his younger brother.

With those rumors long gone, it looks as if Fehoko might be trying to get another family member to West Texas. While he has two more brothers to go, they are both still young and have a few more years before their recruiting process starts. But Fehoko’s cousin, Taylor Kahai Choy is an ’09 prospect trying to get noticed.

The versatile offensive lineman plays both at the center and guard position and is working hard throughout the off-season with Fehoko and his brothers.

“We train everyday except Sunday,” said Choy. “I lift Monday thru Friday, an hour and a half every day and have practice for an hour after that. We do one-on-one’s on Wed’s and Saturday’s for two hours. I normally meet with Sam and them at their school when I’m done with practice and we just go until it gets dark and we can’t see anything.”

Choy has been receiving attention from UCLA, Utah, Tennessee, Colorado, and New Mexico. The main factor keeping him back might be his lack of size standing at 6-foot-0, 225-pounds.

“It’s all about how I play because I might be six feet but I play like I’m a lot taller and I’m more aggressive than most of these taller guys and that helps me with the height disadvantage.”

Along with the Maui combine, Choy will be visiting a camp at either Utah or Colorado and thanks to Fehoko is thinking about Texas Tech.

“I might be going up to their camp but Sam still has to talk to Coach Leach about it. It sounds really interesting especially if I have people I know up there.”

So why does Fehoko feel like his cousin is a valuable commodity at the Big 12 level?

“This is a guy that we talked to through all these little camps and he goes to all these clinics and offensive line camps and he’s the kind of guy that wants to get better every year,” said Fehoko. “From the first time we went and did a one-on-one session, he’s the most aggressive I’ve gone up against since my older brother. He’s getting stronger and can do 225-pounds 22 times now and we’ve been lifting and he’s an under the radar kind of prospect.

We always tell Kahai that he has to earn his money by beating people on the line. He has this one shot approach and the other lineman is down. He picks up things super fast and since he works with us, he knows what he’s doing and he has counter moves.”

What does Fehoko have to say about Choy’s lack of size?

“Size doesn’t matter to us Polynesians. It’s on the inside and how you ball out. I’ve gone up against the number four offensive tackle in the nation and ate him up easily and all of a sudden I got attention from schools across the country. He will perform and that is what he’s going to do at the combine on Saturday and rest of the camps this summer.”

Fehoko would love to see Choy in the Tech offensive system but still needs to plead his cousin’s case to the Red Raider coaching staff and see what happens.

“I would love for Kahai to come to Tech. This would be so good to have another lineman come with me but it’s up to the coaches and not to me. If they want him then it’s the best thing that could happen. But I know the coaches need to evaluate him and see if he fits in the system.”
