Good morning everyone, I wanted to start posting some recruiting notes vs. full articles because the dead period ends at midnight this Thursday and we expect to see several recruiting tidbits start to surface once the coaches hit the road again.

The 'open' contact period, meaning coaches can visit high schools and junior college programs, plus conduct in-home visits and host official visitors will run from this Friday (Jan. 11th) through Monday (Feb. 4th) with National Signing Day falling on Wednesday (Feb. 6th).

"The Texas Tech coaches reached out to me earlier today," Hodges-Tomlinson said yesterday. "It was Coach (Luke) Wells, he wanted to check in with me and learn more about my recruitment. He also talked about offering me and I think they are, but I don't know when yet. They like me as a defensive back, and Coach Wells mentioned they were planning on coming to the school to see me in person."

The two-star prospect is the nephew of Hall of Fame running back Ladainian Tomlinson and lists three offers from Kansas State, Baylor and Texas State.

"Yes sir, I have been talking with Coach (Matt) Wells every week," Murray said yesterday. "He is the new head coach at Tech and he is a very cool guy. Coach Wells is fired up all of the time. We have mostly talked about my recruitment, we have gotten to know one another and he wants me to schedule an official visit to Tech.

"I'm going to start taking my official visits after the dead period. I don't have one scheduled for this weekend, but I'm working on scheduling a few visits at the moment. I mentioned the potential visit to Texas Tech, and I'm also talking to the coaches at Colorado, Wisconsin and North Carolina."

"Yes sir, I had a phone call with Coach (DeAndre) Smith a few days ago," James said yesterday. "He was mainly introducing himself to me and explained how he's going to start recruiting me. He also mentioned a possible visit to campus this month and how he is going to come see me in person once the dead period ends.

"Coach Smith said he is looking for two (2) running backs that can also run in the slot position."

The two-star prospect was a one-time Houston commitment and has interest from a handful of other programs at the moment.

As a senior, James had 123 carries for 821 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing this season.

"Yes sir, I have been talking with the Texas Tech coaches lately," Rose said. "Coach (Paul) Randolph recently took the defensive line position at Tech and he was recruiting me this year at Memphis. He is a very passionate coach and has high energy.

"I'm only really talking to Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech. I don't think anyone else really knows that my recruitment is still open and that I didn't sign early. Coach Randolph and I have talked about scheduling an official visit to Tech, but I don't have a date set yet."

The two-star prospect lists 20 total offers and held an offer from the previous coaching staff.

A source in the Rivals network reached out last night and mentioned that the Texas Tech coaches are scheduled to visit Tulsa Union once the dead period ends, and the coaches mentioned they were showing interest in Ja'Travis McCloud - an unsigned defensive back prospect in the 2019 class.

McCloud mentioned he has not talked with the coaches directly, but did mention that he has camped with the Red Raiders in the past.

This name is probably a blast from the past for the many who follow recruiting around here, I know it was for me.

Zach Abercrumbia was a one-time Texas Tech target during the 2015 recruiting cycle and he eventually chose the Rice Owls. Now several years later, Abercrumbia is an all-conference selection and team defensive MVP.

He graduated this December and is announcing his intention to transfer for his senior season sometime today.

The previous staff added a graduate transfer from Rice just last season, Preston Gordon. Could it happen again? Well, immediately the answer is no, but there is a connection to the defensive tackle prospect.

New defensive line coach Paul Randolph was in contact with Abercrumbia about transferring to Memphis prior to his move to Lubbock. Abercrumbia mentioned SMU, Memphis, Toledo, Penn State, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Tulane as the programs who have already reached out with interest.

The spring semester at Tech starts next Monday, January 14th - so any late additions or graduate transfers would happen pretty quickly.

My guess on Abercrumbia is that he ends up elsewhere, but you never know...
