First off, hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
During the holiday, I actually ran into a Texas high school coach I know pretty well, one who is having one of his players recruited by an SEC offensive coordinator, and they got on the subject of Coach Kingsbury, who this coordinator is familiar with but has never coached with before.
That SEC OC had a few things to say about Kliff as an offensive mind:
-He thinks Kliff is the smartest offensive mind in all of college football, bar none. Not even a question that he’s the guy at the top of the totem pole. In fact, because of that, this OC makes it a priority to study Kingsbury every offseason.
-A reason why he thinks that? That OC said that Kingsbury ran what he calls “tweak” plays this last season. These were plays specifically designed to disrupt what opposing defenses were trying to do against Tech, and Kingsbury would draw up a handful up in each game plan every week to try and pull defenses into their tendencies, showing similar looks to base/bread & butter/staple plays.
-This SEC OC went back and charted all of Kingsbury’s tweak plays from this last season. He didn’t find a single tweak play that Kliff ran that went for less than 25 yards or wasn’t a touchdown.
The reason I share this tidbit is simply because I think some like to question Kingsbury’s legitimacy as a great offensive mind. I just simply wanted to give you guys some inside info from an outside source, their opinion on him as someone who’s coached in football for two decades.
Now does this change the fact that this team simply needs to win more games moving forward? Nope, it surely does not.
Just some more perspective I thought some would find interesting...
