A friend's daughter's band has a page on Facebook, and I was talking to my friend's wife tonight. I commented that their band had a lot of 'likes' on Facebook so must be doing well (they had like 90k likes).
She told me those were "bought" likes. They ended up paying something like .15 per like because it make's it appear as though they have more of a following than they actually do. Apparently FB has been offering this for many years for bands and public figures who want to make themselves appear popular.
Kind of off topic but I found it interesting. Next time you see a cause/band/public figure with an enormous amount of likes on their Facebook page which you find odd, there's your answer.
