I know several on this board, including me, travel to Durango for summer vacations. If you're not aware, there is a massive wildfire north of town. It's 22,000 acres in size. If you're traveling there, take note of the following:
San Juan National Forest has been closed as of today. No hiking, camping, campfires, or really anything else. That's 1.8 million acres that encompasses much of SW Colorado.
Highway 550 going from Honeyville to Molas Pass is closed. It has been closed on and off for a week. To get to Silverton/Ouray, you must go through Telluride. That's a 4 1/2 hour detour.
Smoke is very thick, even into DT Durango. If you're traveling with anybody who has breathing issues, this might be a real concern.
Train has cancelled everything until June 17th. I'm guessing the train won't run until July.
Sucks for the locals living there. This a major hit to their economy and about 2,000 homes have been evacuated, including all of Purgatory. Fortunately no structures have burned yet, however Purgatory is at risk.
