OT: Preparing to get a dog from the pound

Tips or advise for the new dog? The dog will have a roommate who is a designed golden doodle that is really well behaved (roommates not mine). Breed will be whatever, probably under 40 lbs as that's my general preference. Beagle, basset, corgi, dachshund, heeler types. Any stories or whatnot? Obviously it'll be a transition and I'll be socializing it often and the pound I'm looking st has free vet voucher and fixes and chips em as a part of fee.
