I have a friend who was paid 2 extra paychecks after he moved to a better job a few months back. My buddy didn't tell me the exact numbers, but let us say the problem goes something like this:
  • Company paid my friend 10K with benefits/withholdings etc
  • $7,500 actually got deposited.
  • The company realized the error, then sent a letter saying they wanted 10K back, or they'd send the matter to a collection agency
  • My friend said he'd pay, but only $7,500 that he actually possessed
What happens in this scenario?
Should my friend wait to go to collections, and just pay the reduced amount that collections will take?
If the company gets the whole 10K back, they have spent $2500 of his money involuntarily -- will he ever see it again?
