I hope you guys will indulge me I have to give props to my Grandad who turned 90 today. I can't believe he's that old, time flies. He grew up in Aspermont and went into the Navy at 17 towards the end of WWII. He was a Sea Bee and worked in Japan rebuilding and building barracks after the bombs dropped. The other day his barber put a video of him on Facebook telling a story about finding a young Japanese boy with radiation burns eating out of their trash and him and his Navy buddies cleaned him up and fed him and he started following them around everywhere and working as a translator for them. His whole family had been killed in the blasts. I think that says a lot about the men like him that were put in a tough situation and just did what they could to make it better. It wasn't just about fighting but the little things they did to help people too. I like to think that they helped that boy move on and have a decent life after such a devastating event. He's one of the greatest men I've ever known, did what was asked without thinking he was owed anything. Worked hard every day of his life from picking cotton, going overseas in the Navy, working on the 6666 ranch, working for the county electric coop and working his own ranch and raising a family. He taught all of his sons and grandkids what it meant to work for a living. At his age he can still run his cows and takes care of my Grandma who isn't getting around like she used to.
Anyways, I know there are several of you that have similar stories of your own parents or granparents from that same generation. I try not to think about what it will be like when they're not around anymore. If they're no longer with us keep their memories alive and if you're lucky like me and you can still talk to them do it as much as you can and cherish the time you have with them.
