I have found out this morning that my first editions of Shelby Foote's Civil War Narratives have been lost forever. I had lent them out to a friend who had them for around two years. He has offered to replace them by purchasing them through Amazon and shipping them to me or if I wanted them through audio or kindle.
The problem is that mine were First Editions from 1958, 1963, and 1974. I was given them as a present from my mother over twenty years ago. I know that they were somewhat expensive back then because she had bought them as previously unsold first editions. I have no idea the price she paid. Is it too much to expect my friend to replace them with first editions? They don't have to be new but at least very good shape used. Or should I just write it off as lessoned learned and accept the ones he sends? What if he replaces them with paperback?
