OT: In the Market for a Laptop

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop soon, and I am so out of the loop as to what attributes to look for. I'd love suggestions as to which way to go. I have no allegiance to either Windows or Mac OS. I'm wanting a good mix of value and user friendliness. I'd use it for some light bookkeeping, MS Office type stuff, streaming video, and some light gaming for the kids. I like what I've read about the MS Surface, but want to make sure it has functionality beyond being just a tablet.
