Saturday morning I was involved in a near miss while taking off to head back to OKC. The helicopter I was in had an engine malfunction while lifting off and we shot right as soon as the wheels lifted off the ground narrowly avoiding a light pole and then pilot regaining control before slamming into oak trees. The pilot then fought the helicopter to keep it hovering in place stuck in between 2 oaks and a light pole. He then managed to get enough power to the engine to get back over the light pole and back to the helipad. After landing we inspected the aircraft and we did suffer rotor damage from chopping tree limbs, so we were pretty close to it going terribly wrong. Lots of what if’s that change this story into a fireball, but it’s all good.
Anyways, hitting me a bit more today so just wanted to remind everyone to not take life for granted and live life to the fullest because you never know what’s gonna happen. Pretty emotional moment, so talking about it helps get over it so thanks for the free therapy RRS. Oh and avoid helicopters, I know that was my last flight on one.
And I have to apologize to RRS because I was going to get some awesome pics flying back over campus on the return flight to post, but engine failure had other ideas.
Anyone else have any near death stories to share?
PS @ChinookRaider You are a crazy bastard flying those things around.
