OT: Christmas Light Advice

I'm hanging Christmas lights up this year and bought some of the shingle tabs below. However it looks like my shingles are glued down pretty tight & these won't slide all the way in on some spots. Anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a better clip to use? I was thinking of cutting these but wasn't sure if that would cause them to slide off. Any advice is appreciated.
