Talk to me about the merits and pitfalls of an olympic model for college athletics (i.e. student-athletes are free to earn whatever they can in endorsements and outside income).
I see it like this... the kids are already being paid, we know it's happening, and there is very little that can reasonably be done to stop it all together. The Olympic model opens it up to let the market decide their value, and this applies within and across sports (FB and MBB players will most likely demand more in endorsements than VB).
I've heard the argument that you would just have x booster give a player money for an "endorsement", but it seems like that's already happening. If a booster feels like a player is worth a certain amount, that's the market deciding. Competition is already skewed towards the blue bloods, so I don't see that the playing field would change all that much (although maybe I'm underselling this aspect).
Thoughts? Am I an idiot?
