Listening to Mark Schlereth this morning talk about the Dolphins defensive turnaround being due to the fact the Dolphins offense was 73% passing, and because of this, the Dolphins defense was not practicing enough against the run. He said you have to get enough reps on defense in weekly vs. run sets to develop the toughness and strength it takes to stop the run. I have found that guy to be 1 of the most knowledgeable analysts they have had over the years, so I think his opinion is valid.

Could this be the cause of the horrid run defense over the years here? It sure makes sense to me. I don't know what practices are like, so IDK. If teams like Temple, Iowa & Boise St. can find the talent to stop the damn run, then it should be possible with what is on this team now. I'm starting to think it's more than just the players. Run defense issues has spanned several coaches and so it's not just KK or Gibbs.

Another thing that bugs me is the lack of bigger power backs on this team and in the past. KW is the only 220+ RB I can remember. No Blocking TEs either. About all we get is some walkon FB that does a half-ass job when they are in there. I'm also not a fan of these 210-220lb inside LBs. Obviously, I'm not a coach, but I think you need at least 1 240lb LB and 2 would be best to consistently stop the run. It's rare to find a guys like Striker or LaVonte David. Dakota Allen was 230+ and they had him loss weight. Doesn't make any sense to me. I think stopping the run is more important than stopping the pass. A defense that can hold teams consistently below 100 yards per game, but might give up 250-300 passing yards is still going to win a lot of games with an offense that puts up 45+ PPG.

So, is it the offense to blame for the shitty run D?
