McNamara is our best punter since Maury Buford. His HS tape showed guys falling down just fielding his punts. The height of his punts eliminates any chance of returns and you can see returners struggling to even fair catch them. And he has already put 3 inside the 1 this year! All Big 12 and maybe All American.
Our OL screens suck. And they jumped our WR screens. I only remember 1 screen by them and it went for 50 yards. They obviously read our blitz and audibled. We had no aggressiveness after that. We stayed in a 3 man rush 90% of the time. When you have a team on their 6" line, down 1 score, late in game, you have to at least give a threat of a blitz. Lining up in a 3 man line took that fear away and they go for over 5 yards up the gut. At least show a 5 man front and the possibility of getting a push inside, even if you're gonna back out at the snap. That was the point I knew it was over. Ugh
Don't know if it's scheme or Bowman's tendencies. Less than 10%, maybe 5%, of our passes were inside the hash and more than 5 yards downfield. Yet our biggest play with Mannix was one. I know Thompson caught 1 or 2 there. We have to keep defenses honest there.
Finally, their defense ignored Bowman on the read option. It's like watching Webb run it. No threat at all, so DEs were crashing down. We tried several of those where he keeps it and then goes down the line and throws it to the wide out. But as a running threat, ugh. He's never going to be a qb who extends plays or runs for more than 10 yards. That's a huge part of a spread offense we miss. Not saying he can't be effective, but he can I'll afford to be confused or have an off night passing the ball due to that limitation.
I'm not conceding this year, but last night was a kick in the groin. If adjustments aren't made, OU will beat us 40. Roll Bowman out, shuffle pass, fix our OL screens, or something. The idea of a stationary target in the pocket against them, or any good DL is disturbing.
