Some observations from the weekend series win against Iowa at Dan Law Field…

-This was a big series for the Red Raiders, now in the top-70 of the RPI after Sunday’s game, a jump of more than 100 spots since earlier in the week.

-Tech is rolling right now, despite the loss on Sunday, and it’s a great time to keep working with Oklahoma State

-Brendan Girton didn’t have his best stuff on Friday night, which was something that he had to fight through throughout the outing. He couldn’t land the off-speed almost at all and was limited to throwing the fastball, which was a tick down too. He still battled and gave them a chance, but obviously you want better.

-Mason Molina has become extremely reliable, he put together another solid start despite not having anywhere close his best stuff or command on the day. Molina has mixed the pitches well and has, to this point, taken that needed step that we were talking about in February.

-Kyle Robinson didn’t put together his best outing, and neither did Taber Fast, but the Red Raiders were able to get him off the hook with the bats.

-Ryan Free has emerged as a quality option from the left side as a reliever. He shoved during his outing on Friday.

-The Red Raiders may be getting more help from the left side in the pen soon with Derek Bridges sounding “close” to a return. Tadlock wouldn’t put a timeline on his return but said it’ll be soon. He’ll be built up to “one inning at a time,” according to Tadlock.

-Continuing on the bullpen, Brandon Beckel looks much improved since last season. He’s done it on multiple occasions early this season, but there’s been quality outings in leverage situations for the right hander. Seems like he’s beginning to be one of the better options out there for Tech.

-Offensively, this was an excellent weekend for Tech. The Red Raiders put together quality at bats against a really, really good pitching staff. By most metrics, the Hawkeyes were a top-ten pitching staff in the nation.

-Gage Harrelson has continued to be well above his years. With my time at the park before the season, I was not expecting him to be this much of an impact with the bat. He has All-Big 12 freshman of the year written all over him. Just outstanding.

-Gavin Kash is beginning to find his power stroke on a consistent basis with two key homers in this series. If he can continue to be what he has shown to be throughout conference play, look out. What a heist from the Longhorns in Kash.

-It is extremely frustrating to see Dillon Carter get hurt in the manner he did on Sunday afternoon. Tech will need an outfielder, whether it’s Washburn, Curtis, Vooletich, or someone else, to be able to generate the offensive production Carter was producing.

-The freshman shortstops seem to be taking better at bats, so it was a shame when Will Burns went down and had to leave the game on Saturday. Tadlock said that “he wasn’t feeling right” and wouldn’t elaborate, so I have my wonders on what it could actually be.

-A note on Burns that I’ve been meaning to share...One of the more respected MLB Draft boards out there had left Burns on the 2023 board on accident, not realizing that he had reclassified. Burns was at No. 76 overall in that mock, which is a hell of a talent to get to campus. Give him time, he has the tools to be great.

-The defense for Tech has continued to be lacking. The shortstop position, and the whole infield if we’re honest, has been lacking. The amount of errors has been concerning, and I’m usually in the camp that they don’t really matter. McGarrh’s error in the ninth on Sunday cost them the game, plain and simple. It’s got to be cleaned up, at least a little bit.

-Overall, an extremely positive weekend. Hopefully they keep momentum rolling against UT-Arlington before the Big 12 opener against Oklahoma State.
