For some reason the thread about the volleyball team’s early success in Big 12 play makes me wonder if Tech fans really understand how truly awesome Tech’s men’s athletic teams were in 2017-2018. The Capital One Cup is awarded to the best men’s and women’s athletic departments every year. Stanford regularly wins the Cup most years. That said, I’ve watched the final standings for many years and Tech’s men’s final ranking were always FAR behind UT and A&M partly because they had better teams and partly because they have more teams competing in NCAA recognized sports (e.g. swimming teams, diving teams, etc.). But that wasn’t true last year.

Tech’s men’s teams finished the 2017-2018 year ranked #14! In the Big 12 only OU finished higher than Tech at #12. That is a first! Even better, Tech smoked UT at #20 and A&M at #29, and I’m almost positive this is the first time Tech finished ahead of both UT and A&M...ever! Compare the athletic budgets and athletic department income of those schools and tell me Tech doesn’t have the smartest AD in the country. Of course, our AD is currently enjoying the financial support of many successful Tech grads who have stepped-up to support Tech academics and athletics in ways we’ve never seen before. (Thank you Prevost!) And it’s time to see women’s sports succeed like the mens teams.

This is truly like the Aggie alumni movement back in the 1970’s-1980’s to transform A&M from a really good school (like Tech) to an academically elite school with state and alumni support. I don’t know about state support but, if Tech gets the right President, we alumni need to step up our support to make the same leap A&M did back in the day. It’s time buddy...it’s time.
