I just got home from Tech's first media availability of the fall. We had Coach Kingsbury in the group, and then I spoke with Mike Smith a bit.
*Kliff on opening with the first practice:
"I think they did well. They were more prepared this year than last, which is good. You always want to see that progression, but we still have to work our way into football shape when the pads come on. It gets a little tougher, but I thought there was good energy to start things off."
*No interceptions from any of the QBs today, and Kliff was pleased with that. Talked about - again - how turnovers will be the focus of fall camp and the season.
*Mahomes went out first with the team in seven on seven reps today. Kliff made sure to note that he and Webb are getting reps about evenly at 50/50, will swap in and out with the first team for now.
*The head coach also noted that he's impressed with where all the players are with the offense as far as the scheme and learning plays. The quarterbacks were audibling to to plays they haven't installed yet this fall, and the O-line and skill players were on the same page, so that's a great sign in his mind.
*Kliff said starting practice today was "Very special considering the offseason we had."
*Coach Smith was very happy with the way things got started today, noting how happy he is with the way his seniors are leading the D-line vocally, really got after it with great effort today.
*The DL coach also said that his two newcomers, Lonzell Gilmore and Broderick Washington, have their heads spinning a little bit right now, but that happens with freshmen. He's happy with their effort right now, though.
