I told her that it was like religion, or your team. You support based on faith and connection, regardless. She said yes she understands tribalism, but is that it? I don't think she's ever supported a team the way we support Texas Tech. So I don't think she understands that pull.
I said, well think about the south during the civil war. Why do we have a Southern Baptist Church? It's because the Baptists were putting out a lot of pressure about the societal evil of slavery, so the Southern Baptists split off and concentrated on a "personal relationship" with Christ rather than society evils. They ignored the evil of slavery and concentrated their "good hearts" on their own soul and not what their society was doing.
I said perhaps some of them don't care as long as what they think is truly evil... abortion or gay people... is discouraged by laws. Trump will put the "right" person on the supreme court, so it doesn't matter what his character is.
She didn't accept that either (she's German... you can't talk her down).
I also told her that even though she can see them as good people despite political beliefs, most of them would NOT see her as a good person because of hers. But she said no, they are polite and kind to her.
So finally I told her I'd ask y'all. Why can good people like most of you, support a bad person like Trump.
PS. I predict part of your answer will be something about Hillary. But you hated Obama too and he was a very good man.
My personal opinion is that MOST people are brainwashed, and not paying attention, but eventually everyone comes around.
