SCHOOLS CHASING AFTER JONES
Basketball season hasn’t stopped football coaches from chasing after four-star WR TJ Jones.
Indiana passing game coordinator/receivers coach Grant Heard and Texas Tech outside receivers coach Jovon Bouknight were both in attendance for Columbia’s game against Suwannee on Friday night. But they both want Jones for football as National Signing Day less than a month away on Feb. 6.
Jones has yet to commit anywhere, only releasing his top eight schools via Twitter on Nov. 23, 2018. Indiana made the cut and for obvious reasons — they’re in his ear as often as possible.
“They show love,” said Jones, who caught 42 passes for 833 yards and 10 TDs as a senior. “They’re always coming to talk to me and in-home visits. They want me.”
The question remains whether Jones wants the Hoosiers.
Indiana made Jones’ final cut along with Miami, Florida, Penn State, Ole Miss, Louisville, Tennessee and North Carolina. Texas Tech has yet to officially offer Jones, but the Red Raiders have made a late push for him under new head coach Matt Wells
“They just jumped on me so I don’t know,” Jones said. “They say they’re interested through the roof for me. That’s what (Bouknight) told me today.”
Miami’s program was in a state of turmoil just two weeks ago when Mark Richt suddenly resigned as head coach. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has since taken over, and despite firing the rest of the offensive staff, Jones’ interest hasn’t wavered in the Hurricanes.
Jones says Diaz has been in contact with him and that’s helped. He also likes Miami’s new offensive coordinator Dan Enos, who was hired Friday after spending this past season as Alabama’s quarterbacks coach.
“That’s big time,” Jones said of the hire. “Anybody that’s coming from Alabama obviously knows that they’re talking about.”
Just don’t expect Jones to make an announcement any time soon, maybe not even until Feb. 6.
“I’m not leaning anywhere yet,” Jones said.
