There is a huge shortage of officials for Texas high school football. That problem will likely spill over into basketball as well.
That was the message that Michael Fitch from the Texas Association of Sports Officials presented on Sunday, the opening day of the two-day UIL legislative council meetings in Georgetown. At this point, Fitch told the UIL, TASO is trying to find anyone it can to officiate.
“So far this year, we have had 50 high school football games where the local chapter could not cover because of a shortage of officials,” said Fitch, TASO’s executive director. “TASO coordinates getting officials crews from the larger metropolitan areas who many times have some extra. They’re not always the most experienced, but at this point, if they have a striped shirt and a heartbeat, we’re ready to put them in.”
The Austin American-Statesman reported last week that there are fewer than 16,000 high school officials in the state, and 500 more are needed. There was a 12% decline in the number of officials last season, the Statesman reported, and crews from Dallas and Houston are being solicited to officiate games in small towns in West Texas.
