So my Dad took the family on a driving trip from Dallas to New York in 1965. At that time he had business and some major customers in the New York area and specifically Long Island. A friend and fellow golfer made the trip with us and one day on Long Island my dad dropped us off at Bethpage State Park about 8 am mid week. We went into the pro shop, no wait back then, and asked to play. The pro said what course of the five? We replied what is the hardest ,he of course said the Black. He said it is really tough but, being all of 13 and thinking that we were pretty good golfers our attitude was let’s see the whole course. So played from the tips thinking heck I can occasionally bring 80 how hard can it be. Well it is real real difficult. Shot about 130 as I recall and almost ran out of balls. Have never seen so much sand in my life and unbelievably long. Even at that young age a beast to walk. If you ever get the chance good luck.
