Alright - lets get it cooking while it is fresh on my mind. Will add more as I think about it.
Things to do in Memphis (besides watch football):
- Try not to get shot. This is one of my favorite games to play! (kidding)
- MLK Jr/Civil Rights Museum - used to think it was dumb when I was a kid but super interesting now that I am more mature.
- Graceland (If you're an Elvis fan/into that thing its worth the money, if not into him I'd go Civil Rights museum instead).
-Mekas Cookies - where Young Dolph was shot and killed. Good cookies and a historic landmark if you're into rap music.
- Grizzlies game at FED EX Forum - Grizz game atmosphere is electric.
- Beale Street is cool
- Peabody to watch the ducks do their thing.
- A few soul/blues music museums if you're into that.
- Bass Pro at the Pyramid - not yo average BP. Pretty cool spot, especially at dark when you go up top to the overlook.
Food in Memphis:
Chings Hot Wangs - it is in a rough part of Memphis - full time security guards and cops. Place is incredible and a landmark in Memphis. Always someone famous in there. Last time I was there, it was me and my brother sitting at the same long table as Penny Hardaway, Mike Miller, and Derrick Rose. Do NOT pass this one up. If you need an order, get the traditional wings - Golden Glaze - crinkle fries -blue koolaid - extra ranch. Incredible food and experience.
Breakfast at Bryants - just good ole food with some Southern flare.
Huey's is a really good burger, famous for Memphians. I really like it and shooting my toothpicks into the roof with my straw. Great spot to take the family.
The Beauty Shop - if your wife is with you, she will like this spot. Its got a cool little history and set up, good food, staff is usually fun and knowledgeable about Memphis history as well.
Gus' Fried Chicken - not anything crazy unique, but consistent and really really good.
Central BBQ - total opposite of Texas BBQ, but one of my favorites. Nachos are incredible.
Alchemy for drinks - had a bunch of friends that went to dental school at UT Memphis and this is where we would go. Good drinks and atmosphere.
Food on the way to Memphis - thru Arkansas up I30:
Texarkana TX or Caddo Valley AR - Flying Burger - I have sent a few RR folks here on their treks thru my home state. Nothing unique, just good catfish, fries, burgers, pickled green tomatoes, and cinnamon rolls. Please dont go here and not get a roll with ice cream. I grew up on those recipes there.
Keeney's - Malvern AR - hot plate type food that is so good - they just sold to the cook that has been cooking there for a long time - and they havent skipped a beat. Just good ole fashion country food. Yams, casseroles, fried chicken/steak, potatoes, biscuits, jalapeno cornbread. Stuff that Texas calls "soul food".
Nicks BBQ - Carlisle AR - again, not Texas BBQ but so so good. And, they have a million other things to get there. Its a bougie truck stop restaurant in between Little Rock and Memphis.
Craigs BBQ - DeValls Bluff AR - a little ways off the highway, but a Pork Sandwich "Hot" with some fries, cannot be beat. Do not try and drive/eat at the same time, or you will ruin your shirt. This is probably one of the most notorious Arkansas restaurants ever.
