Players out for spring: LB Riko Jeffers, DB Malik Dunlap, DB Xavier Martin and RB Xavier White. They're all out because of post-op surgeries.

Players limited this spring: Dawson Deaton, JJ Sparkman and Nelson Mbanasor. He expects JJ and Nelson to be able to get going slowly over the next week.

Players on medical scholarships now: Demarcus Marshall and Troy Bradshaw.

- Wells saying he believes this day one was better than last year's.

- He has no true evaluation on o-line or d-line since they just went helmets today and will do the same tomorrow. He'll evaluate the tape on skill positions following the press conference.

- It's a coaches job to teach and demand what they want out of their players. They're going to continue to bring in competitive depth. Wells saying this when asked about the noticeable gains in the weight room for some guys. Mason Tharp and Jed Castles will be in the mix to play this year.

- They have a handful of scholarships left to offer. He wants to add a linebacker, a defensive back or two and potentially an o-lineman/d-lineman or two. Best available will be discussed too and possibly an outside receiver. He added every guy added to this roster has brought something new to the team.

- Coach praising DeMarcus Fields for coming back and wanting to be coached by coach Jones and getting gains with coach Scholz. He said to watch out for him to have a big year.

- This is not an "A to Z" Air Raid offense. They're going to put their best out there and some of that isn't through that Air Raid scheme. Sonny is a pro and has energy. Being an alumnus, Sonny is already being a ton of help. The QB fundamentals will be great with Cumbie in control.

- Wells saying DeMarcus Fields, Eric Monroe and all the senior linebackers were great during the winter offseason. Josh Burger's offseason was really good and he's pushing himself in a leadership role. SaRodorick and Erik Ezukanma are taking big steps in leadership. Tharp gained 19 pounds in the offseason and Behren Morton is above 190 pounds. He commended them for completing day one of college practice when they should be in high school this semester.

- All o-linemen are cross trained. Expect to see a lot of guys get snaps at center as well. TJ Storment will get work at both left and right tackle.

- It was a no-brainer for Wells to go with Texas Tech in this Friday's upcoming game in the NCAA Tournament against Utah State. He went over to LCU campus to watch Utah State, though, when they played New Mexico. That was when New Mexico was using Rip Griffin Center for games.

P.S. shoutout to @B. Golan for some great questions in the presser today.
