Here's my take on our team so far this year:
On offense, Pat Mahomes III has been a magician, pulling the impossible out of his hat on a routine basis. That's been really fun to watch, but after the 3rd game watching that magic show, I started getting nervous. We didn't seem to be scoring many touchdowns the conventional way within the scheme of the offense. Pat wasn't seeing the open man, was throwing the ball into the ground, our WRs were dropping good passes or they weren't getting the separation necessary to merit a throw. Magic is fun, but with time the trained eye catches on. Defensive Coordinators at OSU, K-State and UT qualify as trained eyes just like OU's DC. Time to find out if our QB can mature in this offense and our WRs can help him out.
On defense, I finally found words for what I was witnessing as the game played out Saturday. It's like we're running a bunch of midgets out there to stop full-grown men. Our guys often get to the spot, but they just get run over, run through, run around like little people. It's ridiculous. I literally find myself hoping for an unforced error every time our opponent takes possession, because there's no way we're stopping anyone with the personnel we're putting on the field. I don't doubt their hearts. I love the way they suit up with attitude and take the field with optimism, but this schtick is getting old.
Our offense has devolved into a magic show. Our defense is a side show.
I'm hopeful things will get better, but Mahomes is going to have to grow up. Our WRs have to develop.
Our defense has to play with a new level of power and maturity.
