Saw it brought up ages times and thought the exact same thing and thought it deserved a thread of its own. I understand that when the other team is punting from around the fifty you're not likely to have any type of return however it was baffling to watch our guys stand up and not move when the ball was snapped. No pressure in the punter, no blocking to set up a return, and basically as soon as the kick is away they all just walk toward the sideline.
Is that really our strategy on punt returns. Are our special teams players so bad that we just concede to taking the ballwherever it's fair caught or downed? Is there a fear that there's too much risk of a ball hitting someone down the field and causing a turnover so we just want everyone out of the way? Pretty chicken shit approach to the game if you ask me. I remember when we used to be excited to see what would happen on a punt return with guys like Welkerand Danny back there. Seems like now we are just happy to be getting the ball back.
If someone could enlighten me as to why this gives us any competitive advantage please do so.
