Former USC and LA Rams coach John Robinson died this afternoon at age 89. His USC team crushed Tech in the ill-fated 1995 Cotton Bowl that had Spike Dykes apologizing for after the game. But his 1979 USC team was the best team to ever come to the Jones no matter the era in my opinion.
I was a student at Tech, and Tech and USC agreed to a home-and-home in 1978 and 1979. Tech lost only 9-3 at the LA Coliseum in 1978, and the return trip for the Trojans for the 1979 season opener was like the Beatles coming to the Municipal Coliseum. Today, it would be like Alabama on roids. A few ways to illustrate that talent:
* RB Charles White, who would win the Heisman that year, hyperextended his elbow in the first half. He was replaced by true freshman Marcus Allen, who was the game's leading rusher and won the 1982 Heisman. One Heisman replaces another.
* Two players were considered by many the best to ever play their positions -- safety Ronnie Lott and OT Anthony Munoz.
* Four on that team would go into the Hall of Fame -- Lott, Munoz, Allen and OT Bruce Matthews.
* Even with Munoz and Matthews in the offensive line, the Outland Trophy that year for the top linemen went to a guy named Brad Budde.
* There were at least 12-14 first-round draft choices on that team and like 20-something taken in the first three rounds over the next three years.
Tech somehow only lost, 21-7. The 1990 Miami Hurricanes and 1996 Nebraska were right up there as well.
