Norman Grimes of Canyon, best high school hurdler in the nation, signed with Tech yesterday. Even after he announced his commitment a number of weeks ago, he continued to get strong overtures from Oregon, the country's top track program.
For those who continue to think the Amarillo/Canyon "hates" Tech, two more athletes from that way signed with Tech -- or will sign. Amarillo Caprock sprinter Jordan Atkinson will sign on Nov. 17. As a junior, Atkinson ran a 21.04 in the 200, and what supposedly caught Wes Kittley's attention was a 45.5 400-meter split in the 1600 relay.
Also, Amarillo High catcher Clay Koelzer signed with Tim Tadlock. All-District last year, he hit .380 with 4 home runs and 28 RBIs and is supposed to be a plus with his arm.
So in class of '16, you have these three as well as Ivory Jackson of Amarillo High in football. I'd love for the next one from Amarillo to be Jackson's teammate, sophomore running back Jaelin Ford. He's at about 190-195 pounds and has more than 1,800 yards in the regular season. I think Will McKay can vouch for him.
