I thought it was interesting that, out of the 29 coaches that were hired by D1 college football programs in between the 2012 & 2013 CFB seasons, the last 3 Tech coaches are on it.
Here's the breakdown of what has happened to them since being hired:
Coaches still where they were hired in 2013:
Gus Malzahn, Auburn
Dave Doeren, NC State
Mark Stoops, Kentucky
Skip Holtz, Louisiana Tech
Coaches that moved upwards and are still at the next school:
Matt Wells
P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan -- left for Minnesota
Bryan Harsin, Arkansas State -- left for Boise State
Matt Rhule, Temple -- left for Baylor, then the Panthers
Rod Carey, Northern Illinois - Hired by Temple in 2019
Todd Monken
Coaches that moved up (or in Anderson's case, down) but were then fired or otherwise ran off by that school:
Gary Andersen, Wisconsin -- left for Oregon State, then lost pretty much every game and now at Utah State
Willie Taggart, South Florida -- left for Oregon
Bobby Petrino, Western Kentucky -- left for Louisville
Coaches fired from school that hired them in 2013:
Kliff Kingsbury - fired in 2018
Steve Addazio, Boston College - Fired in 2018 and a 21-29 record
Bret Bielema, Arkansas -- fired in 2017
Sonny Dykes, California -- fired in 2016
Ron Caragher, San Jose State -- fired in 2016
Darrell Hazell, Purdue -- fired in 2016
Paul Haynes, Kent State -- fired in 2017
Mark Helfrich, Oregon -- fired in 2016
Butch Jones, Tennessee -- fired in 2017
Sean Kugler, UTEP -- fired in 2017
Mike MacIntyre, Colorado -- fired in 2018
Trent Miles, Georgia State -- fired in 2016
Brian Polian, Nevada -- fired in 2016
Tommy Tuberville, Cincinnati -- resigned/fired in 2016
Ron Turner, FIU -- fired in 2016
Scott Shafer, Syracuse -- fired in 2015
Here's the breakdown of what has happened to them since being hired:
- 14% are still where they were originally hired.
- 20% moved upward from their 2013 job and are still trending upwards as a coach
- 10% moved upward from their 2013 job but are now trending downwards (because they were fired from their next school).
- 53% were fired from the school that hired them in 2013
- 3% are Todd Monken, who was hired by Southern Miss in 2013 but left after two years to be an NFL position coach
