If I'm Wells and I knew refusing to fire Yost = being fired, I'd probably martyr myself.

Beyond getting paid out the rest of my contract, it would keep my reputation largely intact. No one besides our fans will hold a two-year tenure at Texas Tech against Wells. Year 1 after Kingsbury & year 2 during the Rona is one of the easiest "failed" tenures to excuse away in the history of failed tenures.

Plus he'll be known as a coach that sticks up for his staff, even if it costs him his job (and even if it might be the best move for his own self interest).

If he fires Yost and allows an OC to be picked for him, we'll in all likelihood lose too many games next year or the one after, and Wells is fired. And then he won't have the two-year post-Kliff / mid rona tenure excuses.

If he fires Yost and we're somehow successful enough next year or the one after for Wells to retain his job, it will be because of a herculean effort by the offense, which means most of the credit will go to that OC. The one Wells was forced to hire. And when that OC is gone, Wells is back in the cross hairs again.

Outside of the real life aspect of this like moving my family and losing all the jobs of my staff, etc, I would think the right move for Wells' coaching career would be to martyr himself.
