Living on the coast gives you an appreciation for hurricanes. What happened today may be a record. Lee went from a cat 1 of 80 mph to a cat 5 of 160 in just one day. It's projected sustained winds will reach 175. This storm would've devastated any area with gusts of 200 and a 22-25 foot surge but luckily it looks destined to turn away from the US.

They estimate there were 11 cat 5 storms from 1851-1959, a period of 108 years (1per decade. We have had 30 the last 55 years (1 every other year). Not to mention cat 3s and 4s. No wonder it's getting harder to obtain insurance in coastal states.
